Sacred to Their Memory: The History of Slavery at Historic Brattonsville
Established in 1766 in McConnell’s South Carolina, the Bratton Plantation became one of the largest cotton plantations in York County. Like other members of the Planter class, the Brattons made the majority of their wealth through the exploitation of enslaved people of African descent. During three generations of slavery at Battonsville, a distinct black landscape formed. Join historian Zach Lemhouse as he discusses the history of slavery on the Bratton Plantation and the ways in which Historic Brattonsville staff and those descended from the enslaved community are working to interpret the history and legacy of enslavement.
