RAILROAD INFORMATION
Railroads played a significant role in the founding and growth of Fort Mill. The construction of the railroad moved the township from the original location on Steele Creek to less than two miles to the present Main Street. Some key historical facts about the railroad in Fort Mill are:
First train came through Fort Mill on July 4, 1852, and was operated by the Charlotte& South Carolina Railway.
First passenger train depot in Fort Mill was built in 1852.
Union General George Stoneman, Jr. burnt the Catawba River train trestle, located south of Fort Mill, in 1865.
Freight depot was constructed across from the passenger depot, near the intersection of present-day Main and White Streets, in 1890. The freight depot (warehouse) was last used in 1975.
Southern Railroad built a pedestrian foot bridge just north of the depot in 1901. The bridge was torn down in 1951.
Passenger train service was discontinued in Fort Mill in 1966.
