The talk will explore the 1969 Charleston Hospital Workers Strike and the contributions of the African American women at the center. Hundreds of African American women forged a local civil rights-based labor movement that ultimately garnered national attention. The narrative surrounding this moment has evolved in the last fifty plus years from one that denigrated the women at the center to celebrating their contributions. This talk will focus on shedding light on this movement using their experiences as a lens and the shift in public memory and how these ripples in Black women’s historical narratives threaten to render them one-dimensional or completely invisible.
